Some Zaragoza Thoughts
Okay, so it didn’t exactly go to plan but there are a few positives to take away from Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat to Real Zaragoza. Erm, well Ronnie Stam and Antolin Alcaraz played well anyway!
Watching the match was like something from last season - we dominated possession for the majority of the match but didn’t look like scoring. It really is frustrating when you see the players try and walk the ball in, instead of having a shot from more than 18 yards out.
Defensively, we were okay first half. The second saw us make changes and the trialist on the left-side was led a merry dance. I really do hope once Caldwell returns from injury, we’ll be more organised. I did like Alcaraz, his tackling and positioning is top notch, but he does go wandering forwards too much for my liking. I do like a defender to try and move his team forwards, but with the amount of pace in the Premier League, I think it could be a problem. And I can’t see Caldwell catching the likes of Drogba in a foot race!
I am a little bit worried about the team, as I always am. Like any Wiganer, I love moaning. However, I moan for the good of the club and not for the sake of it. Which is not what can be said of some of the arses who booed Jordi Gomez BEFORE he came on. Now I understand why Martinez plays him – he can slow the play down and pick out the right pass. I understand why the fans don’t like him – he slows the play down, when we knock it around quickly and look like opening up a defence. For me, he’s a decent player when played through the middle. He is NOT a winger. In some games, slowing the play down and holding onto the ball is just what we need. We haven’t been doing that for a while now though and that’s why we’ve been struggling.
I still have faith in Bob, but something has to change. Be it either personnel or tacitly. I’ll always be a 4-4-2 man, he’ll always be a 4-2-3-1 man (or is it 4-1-2-3?). It doesn’t matter either way, he’s the professional football manager and he hasn’t got this far without knowing how to play football and coach players. Give the man some time and he’ll get it reet. Hopefully!
Just don’t boo anyone before they get on the field. Support YOUR team. Which includes Jordi Gomez, useless or not.
Oh and the 3rd Zaragoza goal was worthy of Nayim himself. Nice pass Jordi!
DOH!
